  | iMaster kicks out Papermaster Posted on August 9, 2010 by admin I notice that Mark Papermaster who’s looked after the iPod and iPhone hardware engineering department since ’09 has been kicked out. This iPhone 4 thing, all though according the Jobster was a ‘non-news event’, has taken an unfortunate turn. Who’s to say the reasoning behind the removal of Papermaster, but my own time with Apple taught me that the blade is sharp and ready to remove the head of departments who’s team mess up with rapid efficiency.

  | AVI on your iPad Posted on August 9, 2010 by admin Many thanks to Russell Albert for this one. Cinexplayer available to download via the App Store for free, the app allows you to play Divx movies such as .avi on your iPad. There’s some handy video tutorials with the app to show you how to get the movies onto iPad which is just a few steps in iTunes. A great app, download it now before Apple pulls it!

  | Mac or PC? Posted on August 10, 2010 by admin Microsoft are feeling the squeeze it seems after the launch of a new Mac or PC? area on their website; PCs are designed for work and play, with features you need to get things done on the job or at school and have fun at home or on the go. From easily sharing Microsoft Office documents to watching HDTV and Blu-ray movies, PCs help you do it all. I’m sure that’s true and I wish them well, but as Microsoft doesn’t make PC’s and you can run Windows on a Mac, it strikes me that it hardware manufacturers money that have paid for this promotion.

  | All Things D reports that Apple’s traditional iPod-focused media event may be scheduled for a mid-September date this year, slightly later than in recent years. Apple’s iPod media events are traditionally held on either Tuesday or Wednesday, suggesting September 14th or 15th as possible dates. According to several sources and as has been widely expected, Apple will once again be holding its annual special event, possibly closer to mid-September this time. Apple (AAPL), which has had a fall hello-there confab every year since 2005, waited until August 31 last year to announce its “Let’s Rock” event on September 9 at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco. Just last week, a rumor surfaced that Apple might be holding its iPod event in mid-August this year, several weeks earlier than usual. With less than six days to go before the end of that rumored timeframe and no invitations yet issued by Apple, it is appearing unlikely that the rumor is correct. As for Apple’s product release plans for the media event, whenever it might take place, there is strong evidence for a refreshed iPod touch, with claims of a high-resolution Retina display and both front- and rear- facing cameras. A refreshed iPod nano is also expected, with some sources wondering if a tiny Apple-branded touch screen that surfaced last month might make its way into an iPod product of some sort. Apple may also be offer some music-related announcements such as a cloud-based streaming iTunes, although recent rumors suggest that the company is scaling back on its plans in that area and may still not be ready to make any announcements.

  | Engadget mockup of iPhone 4-style “iTV” device serving App Store content Engadget provides a follow-up to its late May report revealing Apple’s plans for a revamped Apple TV product. The previous report had suggested an iOS-based device at a price point of $99 with limited onboard storage that would be capable of 1080p playback, but today’s report claims that some things have changed in Apple’s plans. Well we’ve gotten a little more info on the project, and it’s not all good. Apparently the box won’t be capable of handling (or enabled to handle) 1080i or 1080p video. Instead it will only push out 720p clips. The word — and cause for much internal debate, we’re told — is that this has something to do with the A4’s inability to crank on higher resolution content, but we don’t see how that’s possible considering the iPhone 3GS could play back full HD video. Furthermore, the device will be getting apps and presumably an App Store entry, though it’s unclear if there will be cross-pollination between iPad and iPhone / iPod touch offerings and new Apple TV applications. Also of significance, Apple is reportedly renaming the Apple TV to “iTV”. Apple initially announced its set-top box product as “iTV” in September 2006, but changed the name to “Apple TV” for its launch in January 2007. Coming full circle, Engadget expects the new iTV to make its debut sometime later this year.

  | Hi Will, I'm still listening to your podcast having started with the first one and I was the winner of the one and only competition that you did. I still have the T-shirt. I have now handed the Sherlock Holmes book onto my daughter. When I received it from you she could barely walk. How time flies. Like a banana apparently. Or is that fruit flies? Anyway, I too jailbroke my iPhone 3GS recently because I got fed up with waiting for Apple to add Wi-Fi syncing from iTunes to it. With the iPods it was possible to drop them onto a USB dock and have them charge and sync; and if you had a powered hub the iPod would continue to charge even if the Mac was shut down. With the iPhone there are two problems. I have been unable to find a powered dock that continues to charge when the Mac is switched off and so I have to use a simple charger dock and swap to a USB dock when wanting to sync. The problem here is that the iPhone interferes with the hub and while communicating with a mobile network will generally disconnect itself and any other devices on the same hub. To get around this I switch it to airplane mode. Consequently I often forget to do this and arrive at work without the most recent British Mac podcast to listen to! What a pain compared with how it used to work. With a jailbroken iPhone and Wi-Fi Sync my iPhone sits in the charger dock and upon running the Wi-Fi Sync application the iPhone appears in the iTunes devices list, syncs and disconnect all without being moved, switching into airplane mode or anything It doesn't need to be in the dock either. I can just as easily sync from any room in the house. The only way it could be easier would be if the Wi-Fi Sync application could detect my wirless network and launch automatically. If you do jailbreak, the other usefull app is LockInfo which allows to to preview, weather, calendar events, mail, phone calls, sms and other stuff from the lock screen without having to unlock the phone. Recommended. Really enjoy the podcast. Usually listen to it on a Sunday afternoon while walking the dog. I do draw some funny looks when I correct you on some technical issue out loud but I think the neighbours are getting used to me. Keep up the good work, Regards Simon Robins

  | Dear Sir, I'd love to know which recording of that great British classic (Rule Britannia) you're using at the beginning of the podcast? Love the podcast, by the way, and your amusing and entertaining banter ... Keep up the good work! Terry Martin

  | Good Evening (etc), My name is Rod. and I have been listening to the British Mac podcast for years. I would like to agree with the sentiments of the other members and thank Will for establishing a podcast with a unique character, delivered in a manner that concentrates (mostly) on the more positive British traits (puns, appreciation of history, self-deprecation, cricket and beer). I became a Mac fan via the NextStep/OpenStep route, I wanted a UNIX machine for day to day use, once Mac embraced OS X it really became the only choice for me. During the week I attempt to stop city traders from losing too much money and where possible get them to switch to Mac. Good Luck with the move to full-time. Rod. Link to Post - Back to Top Logged

  | Really enjoyed the aperture/lightroom comparison, not sure about the ref - how could he have not seen that goal! lol I do have a question for gav/anyone. I currently use photoshop/cameraraw for photo editing then batch convert into jpegs ending up in iphoto. What's the advantage of using aperture/lightroom over this method? I assume if I went for lightroom it would still be using the same adobe camera raw? And as I already have photoshop I have more than enough editing power... I've never really looked into either of these applications, am I missing something?

  | I have recently started using an app I would like to recommend.. Cinch - the following text is copied straight from the website Cinch gives you simple, mouse-driven window management by defining the left, right, and top edges of your screen as 'hot zones'. Drag a window until the mouse cursor enters one of these zones then drop the window to have it cinch into place. Cinching to the left or right edges of the screen will resize the window to fill exactly half the screen, allowing you to easily compare two windows side-by-side (splitscreen). Cinching to the top edge of the screen will resize the window to fill the entire screen (fullscreen). Dragging a window away from its cinched position will restore the window to its original size. It is feature of Windows 7 that I really like and was missing on the Mac. It is very cost effective at only $7 I should have posted the link clicky SJBuchanan007

  | Hi Will. Just wondering if this App is worth a mention for anyone like myself who has an 'old' iPhone 3g and has reverted back to IOS 3.1.3 after finding that IOS 4 has slowed their phone down to a crawl. A good alternative to the iBooks App(which only runs on IOS 4) is one called GoodReader for iPhone. Very flexible and syncs books wirelessly. Keep up the excellent work, Dave Warren
