  | Aid for Bletchley Park rejected
Bletchley Park played a significant part in ending World War II Calls to give Bletchley Park more aid have been rejected by the government. A petition in the House of Lords asked for more central funds to be given to the code-cracking site to repair its dilapidated buildings. The government said Bletchley was getting financial aid and rejected a request to associate it with the Imperial War Museum. Bletchley Park chief Simon Greenish, said he was "disappointed" by the reaction to the plea for aid. Cracking codes The call for more aid came from peers who are the children of people who met while working at Bletchley Park during World War II. Labour peer Baroness McIntosh of Hudnall said she "wouldn't be here" had her parents not met while at Bletchley. Similarly, said Lord Clement-Jones, his parents met in Hut Three at Bletchley as did the parents-in-law of Lord Wallace of Saltaire. During WWII, Bletchley Park employed thousands of people who helped to crack the signals of the German armed forces. Work done on many of the machines developed at the site to speed up code-cracking directly contributed to the development of modern computers. Lady McIntosh said that although building works were going well, and the numbers of visitors to Bletchley was rising, it still faced difficulties surviving from day to day. The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) should reconsider its "apparent unwillingness to support this very important project", she said. Lord Davies of Oldham responded for the government to the petition saying that Bletchley had received a grant of £330,000 from English Heritage in 2008 and had been offered a similar amount to help with repairs. He added that the DCMS was "all too well aware of the necessity of ensuring support for such an important historic site". In a statement, Bletchley boss Simon Greenish expressed his "disappointment" at the official reaction to the funding call. While "grateful" for the cash provided for repairs, Mr Greenish said Bletchley Park had other costs to pay. "It is the day-to-day operational costs associated with running this ageing and dilapidated site that the Trust battles to meet," he said. He added that the Bletchley Park Trust was working on a "major" bid for funds from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Success in that bid, he said, would "develop the site into the world-class education and heritage centre it deserves to be."

  | Intel's new baby Moblin, short for mobile Linux, is an open source project focused on developing software for Mobile Internet Devices (MIDs) and other new categories of devices such as netbooks and nettops.[1] Intel launched the Moblin.org site in July 2007 and significantly updated the site in April 2008 with the launch of the Intel Atom processor family at the Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai. A custom SDK is also available on the site. The Moblin 2 OS was specifically designed to run on an Intel Atom processor in a netbook[2]. In April 2009 Intel turned Moblin over to the Linux Foundation.[3] At the Linux Collaboration Summit in April 2009, Intel demonstrated that the Moblin 2 alpha release can load major components of the stack, including the graphics system, and start up in mere seconds.[4] A few weeks later, Novell announced their own rebranded edition of the distribution.[5] On May 19th 2009, Imad Sousou of Intel announced on behalf of the Moblin steering committee the release of Moblin v2.0 beta for Netbooks and Nettops for developer testing. [6] This second major release marked a shift from the XFCE desktop environment to a custom built UI based on OpenedHand's Clutter, a key piece of the Maemo and Sugar graphical environments, built around the standard Xorg X-Windows server. The new UI also includes an integrated Gecko engine web browser.[7]

  | Hi I'm Bruno Edwards I live in Walsall. I'm a theatre tech and video cameraman/editor. I started With a ZX81 with (wait for it) the 16k extra memory board, hanging off the back. We had a lot of fun moving pixels about. After a mammoth typing session that failed to either work or save into the compact cassette back up. I finally concluded that I didn't have the patience to be a programmer. While touring I used a Psion 5 for years, to keep track of the paper work plan routes and generally be brilliant and useful, till I sat on it and broke the screen. Some day it will be reborn!! I switched to a mac after being a reluctant PC user. Starting with a black powerbook G3"wallstreet, I bought second hand, it sailed on till the hinge went floppy. it will be fixed!! My current workhorse Is a 1.5 PowerPC G4 1 gig of ram and a ATI 9700 video card, that came in a shiny box direct from Apple. Oh the joy of following its progress as it s container wound it way from China, finally arriving to be carefully unpacked. It still earns most of my living, editing or as the source for projections in live shows. When it has to work. Use a Mac.

  | Halo-shaped craft
Last updated: 29 April 2008 UFO investigator Margaret Fry recounts another bizarre sighting in an area known for its strange goings on
A pair of mobile party DJs could not believe their eyes when they saw a UFO above them as they were travelling near the Dobshill turn-off of the A55 Expressway. It was between 1-2am and they were on the roundabout beneath the A55 which is near the Chester-Flintshire border when they saw a white circle-shaped object in the sky. According to the friends it was well defined and an orange halo around its outer edge. The object appeared to be floating in the direction towards Chester. The UFO then seemed to stop - at which point the glow of the orange disc appeared to intensify. This lasted for just a few seconds before the object disappeared. The men said the craft appeared to be directly above the Dobshill turn-off of the A55 which is busy during the day with traffic leaving the dual-carriageway bound for Wrexham and Buckley in one direction and Hawarden and Queensferry to the other. It should be pointed out that this scene is close to Hawarden Airport and British Areospace's Broughton factory. Private jets and light aircraft use the airport and factory's unusual-looking Beluga aircraft is a common sight in the skies above.

  | Word 5.1 for the Macintosh, released in 1992, was a very popular word processor due to its elegance, relative ease of use, and feature set. However, version 6.0 for the Macintosh, released in 1994, was widely derided, unlike the Windows version. It was the first version of Word based on a common codebase between the Windows and Mac versions; many accused it of being slow, clumsy and memory intensive. In response to user requests, Microsoft offered a free "downgrade" to Word 5.1 for dissatisfied Word 6.0 purchasers.

  | I just heard you mention you can't read reviews of the podcast from other countries... In fact you can.
I often do this to get a better idea about a podcast or application. Just go "home" in the iTunes store, then choose your country down the bottom and subsequently search for what you want when on that other store. This way you can view the reviews in any country.
Hope this helps.
