  | President Obama gives iPod to Queen of England Thursday, 02 April 2009 On April Fool’s Day,we certainly couldn’t blame you if you had chosen to disregard this story, but we have it from no less than the New York Times that Barack Obama, in his maiden overseas voyage as head of state, has given the Queen of England an iPod. And not just any iPod, no siree. It’s an iPod loaded with pictures and video of Her Majesty’s 2007 visit to Virginia, where she went to historical sites such as Jamestown and Williamsburg, as well as the state capital of Richmond (seriously, though, would it kill her to get out of the thirteen colonies?).
We don’t know precisely what kind of iPod the President gave her—we hope he sprung for a touch (laser-engraved, naturally); I’m sure the Queen has just been itching to get at the App Store. The Queen, by most reports, was currently rocking a circa 2005 6GB silver iPod mini, so I’m sure she’ll be glad for the upgrade. In addition, Obama gave her a rare songbook signed by Richard Rodgers; the Queen, in return, gave him a signed, silver-framed photograph of her and the Duke of Edinburgh, the same gift she reputedly gives all her other important visitors - we hear that Russian Prime Minister Vladmir Putin does the exact same thing.

  | Skype for the iPhone In less than two days, Skype for iPhone has been downloaded more than one million times, around six downloads every second reports Skype in a blog post. "This is a phenomenal performance, and we’re confident that it’s one of the fastest-downloaded iPhone apps ever," says Skype blogger Peter Parkes.
Skype for iPhone was released on Tuesday to great fanfare with the ability to sign into Skype from any WiFi spot and call friends and family for free or at a typically low rate. Meanwhile Skype for iPhone has been blocked by Apple's partner Deutsche Telekom’s T-Mobile, the phone’s exclusive carrier in Germany, as the telecoms giant does not allow the use of voice-over-Internet programs (VoIP) applications on its network. Deutsche Telekom AG spokesman Alexander von Schmettow told the Chicago Tribune that iPhone contracts from the company's T-Mobile unit have blocked VoIP applications since 2007. Schmettow said such applications could slow down T-Mobile's network, although Skype lawyer Robert Miller insisted Skype for iPhone pose no threat to network performance. Compatible for iPhone and iPod touch running iPhone Software Update 2.1, Skype for iPhone is available free from the Apple iTunes App Store.

  | Multi-touch comes to WIndows The multi-touch controls familiar to Apple iPhone users will be built-in to Microsoft's Windows 7. Windows Touch will be a "first class way to interact with your PC alongside mouse and keyboard," said the firm. Microsoft believes multi-touch PCs will become popular in retail, public spaces, on laptops and "kitchen PCs". Some Windows machines already feature rudimentary touch input and Apple is also reportedly readying touch for Macs in its Snow Leopard update to OSX. A small number of multi-touch PCs are already on the market, including the HP TouchSmart and the Dell Latitude XT, and Microsoft hopes Windows 7 will create a new ecosystem of devices that take advantage of touch. It has launched a Windows Touch Logo program, which will help consumers understand if a machine has been optimised for the new control system. Windows Touch will features controls such as tap and double tap, drag, scroll, zoom, flick and rotate. In a posting on the Windows 7 engineering blog, the team leading Touch developments said: "Quite a few folks have been a little sceptical of touch, often commenting about having fingerprints on their monitor or something along those lines.

  | Does anyone know when cut/copy and paste was first available? I'm guessing the late 70s early 80s, you know, Fred Harris times. Ahhh, bless Mr Jobs for adding this function 30 years later, love him.

  | Will,
I've got a code for a free copy of 'Sway' on the iPhone for U.S iTunes users only. I won it in the toucharcade.com compo but it's of little use to me. If you want to mention it on the podcast, anyone listening from the U.S can drop you a mail and you can pass the code on.
"Remember, these codes only work with U.S. accounts. Click on the "Redeem" link in the iTunes Store to retrieve the application. Please try to use the code as quickly as possible as these do expire."
Hope all is well with you and your family.
Kind Regards, Neil.

  | Anyone know if you can hide metatags in a HTML snippet in iWeb? Or the little bit of text that comes up on a search engine, can that be defined in snippets? I know it can be done by editing the HTML after export but that's a pain if you update frequently.
Take it easy,
Chris I Am.

  | Hi Will,
Great show as always and good to hear that there maybe a meet up in london! As a media whore here are my suggestions! Both pubs are a stones throw from apple store and have an upstairs bar in both! Depending on how many people will be coming? Fridays in soho can be mayhem and usually standing room only!
How is fatherhood treating you any chance of a picture on the web site of the little man? Also any other thoughts on Alan simpson

  | Welcome to the saving Bletchley Park website. Thousands of people worked at Bletchley Park during World War Two to decode messages that the German forces transmitted, most notably by Hitler to the German high command. The cracking of the codes used, the use of the intelligence gained and the subsequent related actions of the Allies is said to have shortened World War Two by two years possibly saving 22 million lives. The critical importance of Bletchley Park in world history cannot be denied. Bletchley Park is also the birthplace of the computer. The world's first programmable, digital, electronic computer: Colossus was invented and built at Bletchley Park during World War Two to speed the reading of encrypted German messages. Bletchley Park is unique. It combines a key role in modern history along with being the birthplace of the computer. I cannot think of a place more worthy of our interest, our support and our government's support. Please join me in raising awareness of the fundamental importance of Bletchley Park and in saving Bletchley Park so that it will still be there for future generations to visit, appreciate and understand.
