  | Apple’s other Steve to grace ‘Dancing with the Stars’ The Woz on season 8 of ABC's hit show Nick Spence
Apple’s co-founder Steve Wozniak will be among the 13 competitors starring in the new season of Dancing with the Stars, the US version of Strictly Come Dancing, ABC has announced. Woz claims he's not much of a dancer, but said that his goddaughter had persuaded him to take part when ABC approached him about the show.
The Apple pioneer re-emerged last week as the chief scientist at Fusion-io, a computer storage start-up and is believed to be already in training for his new venture. Woz was also a regular on ‘Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D List,’ shown on Bravo in the US, as he was dating the comedian at the time. The other celebrity dancers are: the Go-Go’s lead singer Belinda Carlisle; rapper Lil’ Kim; actress Denise Richards; actor-comedian David Alan Grier (Comedy Central’s Chocolate News); Gilles Marini, who played the neighbour ogled by Kim Cattrall’s Samantha in the Sex and the City film; Steve-O (MTV’s Wildboyz); TV host Nancy O’Dell of Access Hollywood; Olympic gold-medal gymnast Shawn Johnson; pop star Jewel and her husband, rodeo champion Ty Murray; country singer Chuck Wicks; and former New York Giants linebacker Lawrence Taylor. The US version of Dancing with the Stars is hosted by Tom Bergeron and Samantha Harris, with Len Goodman, Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba judging the contestants. Goodman and Tonioli are both stars of the UK version Strictly Come Dancing, hosted by Bruce Forsyth and Tess Daly. The new series begins on ABC on 9 March, UK Gold, now G.O.L.D has shown the series in the recent past.

  | UK iTunes adds wealth of new HD content Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, The Office, Grey's Anatomy, House, Gavin and Stacey join HD iTunes line-up Nick Spence
After a belated and slow start, the UK iTunes store is now showing a more varied selection of popular and cult television shows to download in high definition (HD). Last month cult hit Lost made its debut, with season 5 available as a series or individual episodes.
Season 5 has been joined by Lost season 1 (£29.99), season 2 (£29.99), season 3 (£41.99) and season 4 (£33.99). On average Lost in HD will cost you an additional £10 compared to the already available standard television download, although season 3 costs an additional £14. As a comparison, Lost seasons 1-4 in HD will set you back £136, and a sizeable chunk of your hard drive, compared to around £100 for the DVD box set complete with numerous extras. Other popular and cult US shows include the critically acclaimed Battlestar Galactica, Heroes, 30 Rock, the US version of The Office, medical dramas Grey's Anatomy and House, Eureka, Psych, Dirty Sexy Money, Lipstick Jungle, Ugly Betty and Private Practice. The BBC’s sleeper hit Gavin and Stacey, featuring Rob Brydon and Ruth Jones (also the stars of this year’s Comic Relief charity single), costs £17.43 for season 2. Planet Earth, another firm BBC favourite, costs £24.99 in HD for season 1

  | iLife '09 drops full PowerPC Mac support GarageBand '09 Learn to Play requires an Intel-based Mac Nick Spence
Tests have revealed that Apple’s recently released iLife '09 suite of applications is not fully compatible with older PowerPC based Macs. GarageBand '09, designed to help you learn and play piano and guitar, new ‘Artist Lessons’ only works on Intel based Macs reports Ars Technica, a computer enthusiast's resource.
Although system requirements found on the Apple Store website and boxed software says, in fine print, ‘GarageBand Learn to Play requires an Intel-based Mac with a dual-core processor or better,’ these details seemingly appeared nowhere when iLife '09 was announced with a fanfare at last month’s San Francisco Macworld Conference & Expo. At £69, iLife '09 includes a range of applications, iPhoto ’09, iMovie ’09, iWeb ’09 and GarageBand '09 designed to tempt you to upgrade, although presumably to enjoy the full benefit you will need to upgrade your Mac also. GarageBand '09 introduces Basic Lessons, an easy way, say Apple, to learn piano and guitar, right on your Mac, allowing you to follow along at your own pace with interactive lessons that teach you the fundamentals. Through a series of HD video instructions, synchronised notation and animated onscreen instruments users can play along helped by a series of ‘Artist Lessons’ featuring the likes of Sting, Norah Jones, Ben Folds, John Fogerty, OneRepublic and Fall Out Boy. The lack of PowerPC support for GarageBand '09 indicates to some that Apple are intent in ending support for older Macs once Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard is released sometime during the first half of this yea

  | Nine-year old whiz-kid writes iPhone application
SINGAPORE (Reuters) - While most children his age sketch on paper with crayons, nine-year old Lim Ding Wen from Singapore, has a very different canvas -- his iPhone. Lim, who is in fourth grade, writes applications for Apple's popular iPhone. His latest, a painting program called Doodle Kids, has been downloaded over 4,000 times from Apple's iTunes store in two weeks, the New Paper reported on Thursday. The program lets iPhone users draw with their fingers by touching the iPhone's touchscreen and then clear the screen by shaking the phone. "I wrote the program for my younger sisters, who like to draw," Lim said. His sisters are aged 3 and 5. Lim, who is fluent in six programing languages, started using the computer at the age of 2. He has since completed about 20 programing projects. His father, Lim Thye Chean, a chief technology officer at a local technology firm, also writes iPhone applications. "Every evening we check the statistics emailed to us (by iTunes) to see who has more downloads," the older Lim said. The boy, who enjoys reading books on programing, is in the process of writing another iPhone application -- a science fiction game called "Invader Wars." | Hi Will,
Did you know that if you choose multiple files in the finder you can get a summary of all of them in one 'get info' window? Select a load of files, then right click on one. As you press the <ctrl> key the item 'get info' changes to 'get summary info'.
Cheers. -- Darren Davies

  | Overview: World Tides 2009 predicts tides for thousands of stations worldwide without requiring an Internet connection. It works by using the Simplified Harmonic Method formula on the harmonic constants found in the four-volume set of the 2009 British Admiralty Tide Tables. It also predicts moonrise, moonset, sunrise, sunset, and moon phases based for each particular tide station location. Note: The "Download Now" link directs you to the iTunes App Store, where you must continue the download process. You must have iTunes installed in order to open the link, and you must have an active iTunes account to download the application. This download may not be available in some countries."

  | Thunder & Lightning has (barely) one practical purpose: to measure your distance to a sound source. It works for thunder and lightning, fireworks, rocket launches, or other loud events visible from a (hopefully safe) distance away. Just press the Lightning button when you see the event, and Thunder when you hear it. Modern technology does the rest.
To perform this trivial task even more accurately, you can enter the temperature of your surroundings to more precisely calculate the speed of sound. You can also choose between U.S./Imperial and metric measurements depending on your personal unit preferences.
Should its intended purpose be insufficiently useful, this application can also be used as a reasonably precise (if redundant) stopwatch, a speed-of-sound calculator, a Fahrenheit/Celsius converter, or as an odometer if you happen to be traveling at precisely the speed of sound.

  | Kernal panic solution by Cyber Chimp
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
  | An attempt at a quick explanation:-
somehow (possibly either through a stuffed up OS update, or device driver installation) the computer ended up with a mixture of old and new kernel extensions. (the IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext extension seems to have been up to date, but the IOUSBFamily.kext extension which it depends on for some of it's functionality seems to have been the previous version). The kernel panics were probably IOUSBMassStorageClass.kext having a major tantrum because when it went to try and make use of IOUSBFamily.kext it couldn't find everything it wanted / expected.
starting the Mac in Safe Mode reduces the number of kernel extensions loaded, but still loads the 'essential' ones from Apple - which would probably include USB ones - hence still getting the kernel panic (I can't really explain why this would also occur when trying to start from DVD though).
fingers crossed this will be third time lucky for you with the 10.5.6 update.

The "name four" forum game being co-ordinated by Peter (pg2114) in the Ye Olde Mac And Mouse section is probably worth a mention (having suggested it reminds me I need to pull my finger out and get my entry submitted!)....

  | Hi Will me old mate.
I’m mega busy at the moment, hopefully I’ll get some time to put together part 1 of the automator jobby for the magazine, but for the moment here is another tip that you might like to use... - After buying the stunningly excellent “The Hitchhicker’s Guide to the Galaxy” box set on CD, I needed to get them into iTunes as proper audiobooks, so here’s the steps I took to do this, each book comes on multiple discs with multiple tracks, so they need to be combined together.
Making audiobooks
1. Set import options to AAC 128k <iTunes/preferences/import settings> 2. Insert the first CD 3. select all tracks and click <advanced/join CD tracks> 4. import the CD making a note of the track name. Go back to 2, repeat until you have imported all the CD’s for the audiobook you want to make. 5. Copy each track to the desktop 6. Join the m4a tracks with quicktime player, using cut and paste. For instance, select all of track number 2 and cut, then place the edit point at the end of track number 1, then paste. Repeat this for more tracks, pasting at the end of track 1. 7. Export track1 as AIFF 16 bit stereo – this is probably overkill but produces a great result. 8. Copy the AIFF track back to iTunes 9. Copy the M4A track details into the AIFF track making sure the ‘Album name’ is correct. 10. Convert the AIFF track to AAC by right clicking and choosing ‘convert to AAC’ 11. Copy this AAC file to the desktop 12. Clean up and delete temp files on the desktop and iTunes 13. Rename the desktop M4A file to an M4B file 14. Get artwork image from Google images and drag this to the desktop 15. Copy the M4B file to iTunes and apply the artwork after checking details with get info. Drag the artwork into the artwork box.
Struth I suppose that seems long winded, but its not bad when you are actually doing it. The advantages are that its free, and you learn about how iTunes works, your audiobook shows up as a proper audiobook, and it keeps your place so that you can carry on listening at the point you had to stop.
There are probably easier ways to do this, but I couldn’t get any applescript to work properly. I’d be interested to know if this can be significantly simplified whilst still doing it manually just using iTunes and quicktime.
Hope that this has been helpful -- Darren Davies

  | Jonathan Pugh suggested Colin Chapman

 |
 |
  | Anthony Colin Bruce Chapman CBE (19 May [1] 1928 - 16 December 1982) was an influential British designer, inventor, and builder in the automotive industry. In 1952 he founded the sports car company Lotus Cars. He studied structural engineering at University College London, joined the University Air Squadron and learned to fly. Chapman left UCL without a degree in 1948, resitting his final Mathematics paper in 1949[2] and obtaining his degree a year late. He briefly joined the Royal Air Force in 1948, being offered a permanent commission but turning this down in favour of a swift return to civilian life. After a couple of false starts Chapman joined the British Aluminium company, using his civil engineering skills to attempt to sell aluminium as a viable structural material for buildings. Chapman initially ran Lotus in his spare time, assisted by a group of enthusiasts. His knowledge of the latest aeronautical engineering techniques would prove vital towards achieving the major automotive technical advances he is remembered for. Under his direction, Team Lotus won seven Formula One Constructors' titles, six Drivers' Championships, and the Indianapolis 500 in the United States, between 1962 and 1978. The production side of Lotus Cars has built tens of thousands of relatively affordable, cutting edge sports cars. Lotus is one of but a handful of British performance car builders still in business after the industrial decline of the 1970s. Chapman suffered a heart attack in 1982 and died, aged 54.
