  | Apple comes to CES? 18,000 square feet has been reserved for the iLounge Pavilion at this years Consumer Electronics Association show adding to the rumours that Apple may be attending CES 2010 in place of its usual presence at Macworld Expo.
CES organisers have announced that the iLounge Pavilion, a unified iPod, Phone and Mac exhibition area at the 2010 International CES, has "quadrupled in size since its official launch last week".
The iLounge Pavilion, co-sponsored by the Consumer Electronics Association and iLounge.com, will feature manufacturers and retailers of iPod and iPhone accessories, related products and services, and based on requests from vendors, will now grow to include leading Mac developers and retailers as well.
Mobis Technology, Pro Clip USA, Incipio Technologies, iSkin and GelaSkins are among the Mac-related companies that usually exhibit at Macworld rather than CES, who have signed up for the iLounge Pavilion.
Other firms, like Griffin Technology and Scosche, that have maintained a presence at both shows, are expected to book larger spots for next year's Consumer Electronics Show.
The 2010 International CES is scheduled for January 7-10 in Las Vegas. Macworld Expo 2010 is set for January 4-8.

  | Buy Apple shares now!
A refreshed iMac range is closer than ever suggests reports as a leading analyst recommends buying Apple shares prior to launch.
Last week Shaw Wu, an analyst at Kaufman Bros, insisted Apple was "almost ready" to launch updated iMacs but was unclear which processors it would use.
Now rather than choosing between dual-core or quad-core processors for a new iMac, Apple may have decided to use both suggests Crave, the gadget blog from CNET citing Wu.
Apple could introduce a two-tier iMac based on screen size, with a 20-inch iMac using dual-core processors, and a 24-inch model offering quad-core processors. Or, suggests Wu, Apple could simply offers two different configurations for each size.
To add to the claims that new iMacs are imminent AppleInsider recently suggested Apple had warned that new reseller orders for the high-end 24-inch 3.06GHz iMac were unlikely to be fulfilled, indicating that production of that model was ramping down or has already ceased.
Meanwhile Bloomberg reports today that Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, currently taking a leave of absence due to health issues, will miss the iMac launch “in a few weeks” again quoting analyst Shaw Wu.
New Mac needed
Apple needs a new iMac to fuel demand as sales slow, with shipments of Mac desktop computers down 25 per cent over the holidays, Wu told Bloomberg.
Despite the demand for Apple desktops being down, Wu suggests now is a good time to invest in Apple shares.
"Product refreshes are very important for Apple because they help drive sales," Wu said. "The iMac is Apple's most important desktop, and we estimate it accounts for 25 per cent of Mac sales."
Gene Munster, an analyst at Piper Jaffray & Co, backed Wu’s claims that a new iMac was weeks away, suggesting also that a new version of the Mac Mini was looming along with a new model of the iPhone this summer.
"We believe Apple will continue to show a robust product pipeline during Tim Cook's time" at the helm, added Munster.

The original iconic players are individually set with over 250 colour-coordinated Swarovski crystals and laser engraved with Elton John’s signature on the rear.

  | Apple Fry at Regent Street
Stephen Fry’s appearance at the Regent Street Apple Store, postponed due to the poor weather has been rearranged for tonight, at an earlier time then previously listed.
Writing on his Twitter page Fry wrote
“Apple Store Regent St event is now on for this pm. 6.15. Can only hold 250 so don't come if it's a tough journey! Booking non poss. Sxx.”
The free Meet the Author event was to be held between 7pm and 8pm on Monday but heavy snow and limited public transport put paid to that.
Tonight Fry will discuss and promote his latest audiobook, Stephen Fry Presents a Selection of Oscar Wilde's Short Stories, a two-hour plus recording available from the Apple iTunes store.
In a blurb for the audiobook Stephen Fry reveals his love for the works of Oscar Wilde.
"Oscar Wilde's Fairy Tales continue to exert the same pull over the imagination and emotions as they did when he first read them to his children in the 1880s. Written with inspired poetic intensity and sudden flowerings of the matchless wit for which he is so well remembered, the stories combine the wisdom of parables with the impact of drama. I have loved them since I was a child: indeed they continue to make a child of me. I do not mind admitting that at the recording some passages were hard to read out loud without choking. I hope you will be as entranced by them as I have always been.”
The Apple Store is located at 235 Regent Street, London, W1B 2EL, 020 7153 9000, the nearest tube is Oxford Circus.
Due to the weather conditions those traveling to the Apple Store are advised to set off early.

Users can play and mix music live, or enable djay’s Automix mode to mix any playlist from iTunes automatically with DJ-style transitions.
In addition to the integration with Nicecast, djay 2.3 includes a new power button for each turntable, which precisely simulates how real turntables gradually slow down the record when being turning off. And a new Auto Select mode for djay's Pre-Cueing feature allows users to automatically listen to one turntable on their headphones while the other is playing through the main speakers. With this, selecting and preparing a new song from the integrated iTunes library becomes even easier than before.
Pricing and Availability djay is available for $49.99 or €39.99 as an immediate download from the algoriddim website, or as a high-quality product box from the Apple Online Store and Apple Retail Stores worldwide. | iWork '09 gets update Apple on Monday released updates to Keynote, Pages and Numbers, the applications it combines in its iWork suite.
The versions affected by this update are the applications included in iWork ‘08, not Apple’s more recently released iWork ‘09.
iWork combines Keynote, Apple’s presentation software; Pages, a word processing and page layout application; and Numbers, a spreadsheet application.
The updates are available for download from Apple’s Web site and through the Software Update system preference pane.
They update Keynote, Pages and Numbers to version 4.0.4, 3.0.3 and 1.0.3 respectively.
Each of the updates “address general compatibility issues,” according to Apple, which declined to offer any more specific information about what’s changed in Keynote and Pages.
The update to Keynote, however, fixes compatibility issues with Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007 and Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2008, as well.
System requirements call for Mac OS X 10.4.10 or Mac OS X 10.5.5 or later.

To play the games, open a new terminal window and type “emacs” and hit return. Once in emacs, press Esc then x to get to the prompt. Now you can type any of the files in the list to play them.
My favourites are: snake, tetris and pong, the old classics. doctor, a shrink in your mac (he/she isnt that helpful, unless you threaten to commit suicide) life, one of the first screen savers. dunnet, an old text based game where you can explore zone, makes the text on your screen go crazy
Have fun!

  | Hi I'm Joe and I've been a Mac user and Britishmac (and Australian Mac) listener for about two years.
I finally switched to Mac after trying Vista for the first time! I have a 20" iMac which I really enjoy using instead of continually fixing/tweaking as with windows.
The other reason I was attracted to Mac was that my first introduction to computing other than the obligatory BBC Model B/ZX81/C64/Amiga was a Sun IPX then various SparcStations so I'm a bit of a Unix/Linux geek
Anyway really enjoying Britishmac keep up the good work Will!
(Unfortunately I'm typing this on an Eeepc as my beloved iMac is currently in the repair shop due to a stuborn superdrive which refuses to eject disks)

  | Hello Will and the crew, I've been listening to the podcast since show 40ish. Love it long time! My introduction to all things Apple came with the 1st gen ipod. When that went Bung! I bought the U2 ipod and 12" G4 Macbook Pro. I currently use the ipod touch for all my mobile entertainment. I'm seriously thinking of buying the new 17" Macbook pro to add to my growing collection.
Happy days! Bob

  | I was using mp3 / 192k encoding for my music thinking that mp3 would be most versatile, even though it takes up more hard disc space.
I've since decided to convert them to aac / 128k instead. The reason is that I can make an mp3 at any time if I need one and my music library would take up less storage space.
Here's what to do.
1. Backup 2. Right click on the headings in music view and add the fields 'kind' and 'size' 3. Sort all music by kind 4. Check preferences are set to import aac / 128k 5. Select all mp3 tracks right click and choose convert to aac.
It took my iMac all night to convert my music but I was able to gain 10gb of disc space without affecting quality. This could also make hard disc based iPods last longer on a battery charge when playing music.
I then set preferences to aac 256k for future imports. Now iTunes is drm free, I'll be buying a lot more music from Apple.
P.S. Windows 7 will join the party too as it includes aac support, as well as h264 out of the box. I hope this applies to all versions of windows 7. This means everyone will finally be able to use the same format for audio and video on every computer using aac for audio and h264 ecoded mp4 for video.
Cheers mate.

  | Hey Will,
Long time listener, not a forum user but I've been on board since ep59. You remind me of a guy I used to work with, who loves all things British and old fashioned as it were. I was always a little bit old fashioned with my love of comedy so me and my friend Steve always got on or rather get on. Steve got me into real ale and every year we have a piss up on a canal boat with our old group of work colleagues from Jaguar Cars in Birmingham. I always listen to your podcast on the way to work and often walk into the office since the "Olde Mac and Mouse" tune. Its really weird, from listening to you for so long long its like we are best friends but don't actually know one another. If you're ever in the Derbyshire / Burton on Trent area, give me an email, you've always got board, lodgings and bandwidth in my humble abode, I've just got to try and explain who you are to her indoors! We have a fantastic local selection of real ales round here & the drinks are on me!
I must say that I was shocked to here on the last podcast that you are a father, I always imagined you to be a cast iron bachelor, solid English oak type. So more importantly congrats on your baby news, very well done! Also really sorry t hear about your father, I had a big tear when listening to your podcast and the dedication I felt like I was let into a private Green family moment. My wife lost her father when she was only 12 and although I never met him, I feel that I know him really well as the family always talk about him all the time, don't stop talking about your father either.
Anyway, reason for the mail, I'm sure that some Green Groupie has beat me to it, but I time machined (Great feature!) and brought back BM63 as you said that you are missing it. I tried to email but it wouldn't do 20mb, so i've put it in my dot mac public area for you to down load at your convenience.
Whilst I have your attention could I put forward Colin Chapman as British Icon for the Lotus philosophy of lightweight motor racing, fuck knows how that makes for good podcasting but as I always dream of having one then my vote is for Chappers!
All the best Will and keep doing what you're doing, I love the show and being reminded of the good old days when we had an empire and the world was British Imperial red!
All the best,
Jonathan Pugh

  | Hi I just thought I'd send a quick email to hi really. I am a recent transferee from wobbly windows to The Mac way of life and what a breathe if fresh air it is. My journey started last March with a Macbook 4.1 and I have just recently purchased an iPhone 3G. What outstanding pieces of kit these are! I am still getting to grasps with the way my Mac operates but David Pogues book The Missing Manual helps me out alot. It's funny really because my son (another will) has just started school and he often mentions how his teachers laptop is very slow( it's a wacky windows one ). He even says to her sometimes you need to get a computer like my dads, An Apple Mac, it's never slow and always does as it's told !. Funny to hear. Anyway that's me , I am loving the podcast which I listen to regularly in work, keep it going it's great!! Cheers Pal Peter from Liverpool.
Sent from my iPhone 3G
