  | Apple Announces Snow Leopard details
http://www.apple.com/macosx/snowleopard/
Since 2001, Mac OS X has delivered more than a thousand innovative new features. With Snow Leopard, the next major version of the world’s most advanced operating system, Mac OS X changes more than its spots, it changes focus. Taking a break from adding new features, Snow Leopard — scheduled to ship in about a year — builds on Leopard’s enormous innovations by delivering a new generation of core software technologies that will streamline Mac OS X, enhance its performance, and set new standards for quality. Snow Leopard dramatically reduces the footprint of Mac OS X, making it even more efficient for users, and giving them back valuable hard drive space for their music and photos. iMac and MacBook Pro Microsoft Exchange box Microsoft Exchange Support
Snow Leopard includes out-of-the-box support for Microsoft Exchange 2007 built into Mail, Address Book, and iCal. Mac OS X uses the Exchange Web Services protocol to provide access to Exchange Server 2007. Because Exchange is supported on your Mac and iPhone, you’ll be able to use them anywhere with full access to your email, contacts, and calendar. Multicore
“Grand Central,” a new set of technologies built into Snow Leopard, brings unrivaled support for multicore systems to Mac OS X. More cores, not faster clock speeds, drive performance increases in today’s processors. Grand Central takes full advantage by making all of Mac OS X multicore aware and optimizing it for allocating tasks across multiple cores and processors. Grand Central also makes it much easier for developers to create programs that squeeze every last drop of power from multicore systems. Open CL 64 Bit 64-bit
To accommodate the enormous amounts of memory being added to advanced hardware, Snow Leopard extends the 64-bit technology in Mac OS X to support breakthrough amounts of RAM — up to a theoretical 16TB, or 500 times more than what is possible today. More RAM makes applications run faster, because more of their data can be kept in the very fast physical RAM instead of on the much slower hard disk. QuickTime logo Media and Internet
Using media technology pioneered in OS X iPhone, Snow Leopard introduces QuickTime X, a streamlined, next-generation platform that advances modern media and Internet standards. QuickTime X features optimized support for modern codecs and more efficient media playback, making it ideal for any application that needs to play media content.
Because Snow Leopard delivers the fastest implementation of JavaScript to date, web applications are more responsive. Safari runs JavaScript up to 53 percent faster with Snow Leopard.* OpenCL
Another powerful Snow Leopard technology, OpenCL (Open Computing Language), makes it possible for developers to efficiently tap the vast gigaflops of computing power currently locked up in the graphics processing unit (GPU). With GPUs approaching processing speeds of a trillion operations per second, they’re capable of considerably more than just drawing pictures. OpenCL takes that power and redirects it for general-purpose computing.

  | INTEGO SECURITY MEMO - June 20, 2008 OSX.Trojan.PokerStealer Trojan Horse Attempts to Take Control of Macs
Exploit: OSX.Trojan.PokerStealer
Discovered: June 20, 2008
Risk: Low
Description: A Trojan horse has been found in the wild masquerading as program for Mac OS X called “PokerGame”. The Trojan in question is a shell script encapsulated in an application, and is distributed in a 65 KB Zip archive; unzipped, it is 180 KB.
The Trojan horse, when run, activates ssh on the Mac on which it is running, then sends the user name and password hash, along with the IP address of the Mac, to a server. It asks for an administrator’s password after displaying a dialog saying, “A corrupt preference file has been detected and must be repaired.” Entering the administrator’s password enables the program to accomplish its tasks. After gaining ssh access to a Mac, malicious users can attempt to take control of them, delete files, damage the operating system, or much more.
Intego VirusBarrier X4 and X5 with virus definitions dated June 20, 2008 protect against this Trojan horse. Intego recommends that users never download and install software from untrusted sources or questionable web sites.
About Intego Intego develops and sells desktop Internet security and privacy software for Macintosh.
Intego provides the widest range of software to protect users and their Macs from the dangers of the Internet. Intego's multilingual software and support repeatedly receives awards from Mac magazines, and protects more than one million users in over 60 countries. Intego has headquarters in the USA, France and Japan.
As the dangers of the Internet grow, Intego is hard at work, developing new software to protect users and their Macs from the latest security and privacy threats.
We protect your world.

 |
 |
  | The exploit takes advantage of a hole found in the Apple Remote Desktop Agent which when active is running as root allowing it to issue Applescript commands at that security level. This means that a trojan app running locally could use ARDAgent to install and run bad stuff without the system ever prompting the user for a password
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
  | There are several things you can do to protect yourself. Turning on Remote Management but disabling all access permissions won't prevent attack but may limit the access a rouge app has. You can also archive (zip) and remove the ARDAgent.app bundle from /System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement directory or change it's permissions using the Terminal. Just remember to change put it back or change it back before running System Update.

  | 2008 PC Tools launch iAntiVirus beta PC Tools introduces a Mac beta of its anti-virus and anti-spyware tool, iAntiVirus
Jonny Evans
Security software vendor, PC Tools, today introduces a Mac beta of its anti-virus and anti-spyware tool, iAntiVirus.
The software promises real-time protection and comprehensive system scanning to detect and remove Mac specific threats. The release follows Apple’s recent advice to users to insall and use anti-virus software, advice contained in Apple's recently-published Security Configuration Guide.
iAntiVirus will detect and remove Mac specific and socially engineered threats, its database doesn't contain unnecessary information about Windows-based threats. The software costs $29.95, though a free beta trial version is currently available.
“Despite the misconception that the Mac OS is inherently secure, internal research has signalled a change in the number of threats targeting this platform. PC Tools recognize that while the Mac platform is relatively safe, it is not impervious to malware,” said Simon Clausen, PC Tools CEO.
Research conducted in the first quarter of 2008 found that 95 per cent of all Mac malware threats identified were OS X related, of which 38 per cent were keyloggers, 30 per cent were hacking tools, 11 per cent were backdoors, while just 2 per cent were viruses
“The Mac has a solid reputation for remaining relatively threat free. However, we are witnessing the use of low level malware scripts, to identify whether there is the potential to infect the Mac OS, as well as the opportunity for malware producers to obtain a significant return on investment” said Clausen.
“We are encouraging Mac users to become more vigilant about security, particularly given the widespread propagation of socially engineered threats affecting most operating systems” he added.

  | Firefox 3 sees 8 million downloads in a day Mozilla logged more than 8 million downloads of Firefox 3 in 24 hours. Elizabeth Montalbano,
Mozilla logged more than eight million downloads of the latest version of its web browser in 24 hours, the company said Wednesday.
Firefox 3 was downloaded 8,349,074 times between 2:16 p.m. ET Tuesday and 2:16 p.m. ET Wednesday - more Firefox downloads than the company has ever had in one day, according to a Mozilla Web site tracking the browser's first-day download process.
Mozilla said on 28 May that it would attempt to establish a Guinness World Record for the largest number of software downloads in a 24-hour period with Firefox 3's release.
As part of the plan, Mozilla deemed Tuesday Download Day and hosted a download party at its Mountain View, California, office.
In comparison, Firefox 2 was downloaded 1.6 million times in its first 24 hours of release; to date, it has been downloaded more than half a billion times, according to Mozilla. There was no Download Day fanfare surrounding Firefox 2's release, however.
Mozilla is now awaiting review by the Guinness judges to see if its goal was accomplished, according to the Download Day Web site. There is currently no record for the number of software downloads in 24 hours; Mozilla's would be the first.
Despite its eventual success, Firefox 3 Download Day didn't go off without a hitch. Interest in the endeavour crippled Mozilla's servers on Tuesday, so the US part of the download process started around 3 pm ET - two hours later than originally planned - when Mozilla's site wouldn't work properly.
The European leg of the effort began a little more than an hour later than planned and marked the start of the download-logging process. There were no more problems reported once the US site was back up and running.

  | Apple's OpenCL promises handheld supercomputer Apple, ATI and Nvidia are working to establish OpenCL as a standard Jonny Evans
Apple, Intel and Nvidia are working together as members of the Khronos Group to establish a standard to help graphics processing units and computers work better together.
The group will specifically evaluate and establish Apple's proposed Open Computing Language (OpenCL) specification. OpenCL should enable any application to tap into GPU and CPU resources through an approachable C-based language.
The aim is to agree, develop and make widely available an open-standard computer programming specification that's capable of efficiently and accurately enabling the creation of solutions that combine the processing power of the computer with that of the GPU for non-graphics tasks.
Apple recently announced plans to support OpenCL in the next version of its operating system, called Snow Leopard, which "is optimized for multi-core processors, taps into the computing power of GPUs," and supports up to 16 TB of memory, the company said.
“The Compute Working Group potentially will be one of the most significant standardization efforts at Khronos. Highly-accelerated parallel computation across GPUs and CPUs is essential to many emerging rich consumer applications that will transform the computing experience of diverse users,” said Neil Trevett, president of the Khronos Group.
“Significantly, this initiative is aimed at both desktop and embedded devices – the day when you will be able to hold a supercomputer in the palm of your hand is perhaps not so far away.”
The Khronos Group is an industry consortium creating open standards, including OpenGL, OpenMax and Collada.
Initial participants in the working group include 3Dlabs, AMD, Apple, ARM, Codeplay, Ericsson, Freescale, Graphic Remedy, IBM, Imagination Technologies, Intel, Nokia, NVIDIA, Motorola, QNX, Qualcomm, Samsung, Seaweed, TI, and Umeå University. Microsoft is not part of the Khronos Group.

  | StopDashboard Widget A reader asked for a version of the DisableDashboard widget which only kills the Dashboard without losing the ability to restart using F12. So here’s a StopDashboard widget, basically a modified version of the DisableDashboard widget.
All this widget does is kill the Dock process (which Dashboard is a part of). MacOSX will automatically restart the Dock but without Dashboard in memory. Press F12 to start it up again.

Hello. My name is Gregor Findlay. Not a techie but I started out working at Xerox selling their Viewpoint based workstations and enjoyed the challenge of convincing Mac users that the Xerox system was even easier to use (which it was) - had to spend years in the clutches of Mr Gates's evil empire but moved me and the wife's businesses to MAC a couple of years ago and never looked back )

Hello! My name is Neil and I'm from Walsall in the West Midlands. Stumbled upon your show and was so taken with it that I've downloaded the lot and I'm working my way through them! Keep up the good work Will !
Neil. =) Hello My name is Matt and I'm a (Mac) Addict after resisting for almost a year waiting for the leopard to be released into the wilds. I gave in when the MacBook was updated in November 2007 installed VMWare almost straight away to relieve any teething problems i might have had (aside from a small number of proprietary apps i rarely use it). i was dragged in by the mythical "Halo" effect (i was playing Halo when i thought to myself i should get a mac) after almost 2 years of ipod use i finally decided to switch. First subscribed when i decided to make the move in early 2007 along with a few other mac shows (I've since unsubscribed from most of them) found it through iTunes as many others have and slowly using the site as well. finally joining the forums after meeting the man himself accidentally during his lunch break this past Tuesday 24th offering to buy him a pint and ending up having Will buy me a pint (Cola I've Been Sober since '97) at a local pub had a nice long chat about macs, iphones and various other topics including religion strangely enough. anyways enough about why I'm here onto who i here my names Matt i live in the wiltshire countryside town of Melksham after moving from Bristol. i work for a fruit machine company and therefore have plenty of time driving around listening to podcasts (so much nonsense on the radio these days) i visit the Tamworth Snowdome every month or so and am slowly building up my collection of apple gear from ipod to macbook and extreme router to hopefully soon a new iphone (with full wife approval surprisingly)

  | Keynote June 08 What do you think? Started by Church Cat and this comment from Gavin « Reply #1 on Jun 10, 2008, 4:09pm » There was a tremendous amount of iPhone blah, very little on OS X and nothing at all on Mac hardware. It's easy to see where Apple's focus is right now.
Having said that, the subsequent announcement about "Snow Leopard" is interesting. At the moment, I find it hard to see where next for desktop OSs in terms of features. Seems like a great idea to focus on performance enhancements. Now my question is, will Snow Leopard be a pay for upgrade, or will it be free? Since OS X arrived, Apple's OS releases have been accused of being nothing more than glorified service packs. Since the name is not really even changing, Snow Leopard sounds like a service pack to me! A free upgrade is not unknown - correct me here, but wasn't the upgrade from 10.0 to 10.1 free?
As for MobileMe, well I'm quite pleased about that. Has the price gone up vs DotMac? I don't know. What I do know is that the demo at the Keynote looked quite slick. Although Phil Schiller is pushing it a bit to say that drag and drop is something new within webmail; Yahoo, Hotmail and DotMac have had this for ages.
And the iPhone? Well I didn't get one last time round but with the new pricing and features, I think I'm sold. I am already an O2 customer and have an old phone, so I have registered my interest on their website. I note that the phones are now available with a subsidy (for the 8Gb) and are coming to Pay as You Go too.
So WWDC Keynote.....some interesting stuff but nothing to get excited about is my feeling.

  | Hi Will, I've got it thanks,
I love the podcast and look forward to listening to it. I'm not fully yet into everything in the show and think the jingles are great.
It's great to have a passion and it really comes across in the podcast. my passion is old ferguson tractors www.ploughmyfield.co.uk and it's the reason I bought my mac. I find it so easy to edit movies, create the web pages with my mac (but don't tell anybody)
One thing I'd like to see in the program is a focus on what people are doing with there macs, what they specifically do with it. If that makes sense.
Keep it up I know that it can sometimes be a thankless task. Keep up the god work
Tim.

  | Hi Will,
What part of the itunes store were you reading when you read the time you had to watch a movie was 24 hours from when you stared playing it. I was just reading the iTunes store about 5 minutes before I started listening to Britishmac and it says 48 hours. I'm sure my email isn't the first to point this out and won't be the last.
And finally.... I was just watching Thunderbirds, the original puppet show not the slightly tacky remake movie and thought wouldn't the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, countdown sound good at the beginning of Britishmac.

  | Hi Will, Thanks for the mention again really great to see you look after your listeners, thanks. Right well after the raft of recent new additions to the British Mac staff i'm making my play for official Mac rumour monger! lol Found this on Appleinsider it's a breakdown of isuppli's estimates of the component cost for the new 3g iphone, makes interesting reading not least because of it's mention of the bluetooth chipset with bluetooth 2 + edr (i dont think 1gen iphone had this) anyway here you go! Price in US$ Part 22.80 8gb nand flash mem 20.00 Improved touch screen 20.00 Display 13.50 Application processor 5.00 1Gbit Mobile DDR 15.00 HSDPA digital baseband module 7.00 2 Megapix Camera module 4.00 WLAN chipset 4.00 Battery 3.60 GPS 2.00 Motion sensor / Accelerometer 4.25 RF Transceiver 1.89 64Mbit NOR flash memory, 32Mbit PSRAM 1.80 Charger (usb) 2.00 Bluetooth 2.0 + EDR Sub total these items $126.84 other costs $37.16 = $164.00 Total bill of materials cost $173.00 ($265 1st gen)Total bill of material + cost of manufacture (putting it together) only $9.00 to assemble it WOW you'd need to do a few of them a day to earn a living! Link to the article (http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/06/24/briefly_8am_iphone_rumor_itunes_tv_shows_for_oz_iphone_3g_parts.html) Retail price $199 not forgetting of course that AT&T or O2 in the UK will be coughing up in the region of $325 subsidy ontop of the actual cost of the phone! (ouch) But does the fact that it is now looking like its going to have BT2 + EDR mean that we may be able to couple the new phone to a foldout keyboard ala the Stowaway type bluetooth keyboards, well here's hoping, as good as the touch screen is i would still like a proper keyboard occasionally! At the very least lets hope that the bluetooth stack will be open to allow an App for the App store to enable it? I will now be in line at 7.02am to pick up my phone on July 11th as the latest rumours are saying it'll be a morning release, looks like an early start then! Regards Phil

  | Hi Will,
I neglected to say where these photos came from... When I sent you the BM tutorial.
I actually took them myself from a balcony of my hotel room whilst visiting lake Bled in Slovenia. I took the 4 photos early in the morning while the lake was still to keep those lovely reflections. I only spent 10 minutes with hugin to get these results as I was doing a quick job to illustrate and test the software for the tutorial, it was the first time I’d used the software. I’m sure I’d get better results by taking more time and effort during the stitching stage.
It just shows you that you can take a pleasing panorama shot with no tripod whilst perched on a balcony. One mistake I made is to leave the camera on auto focus. Really you should use manual focus as a shift in focus for each shot can look very wrong. Luckily I was saved by using a high F number giving near infinite focus range. It’s a lot of fun learning about photography and using the Mac.
P.S. This is a jpg, the tif file that hugin makes looks better.

  | Just to let you know Will, I have been trying the above piece of software for a few weeks after you recommended it and have now purchased the full licence.
Thanks for giving us Mac users some useful advice! I use it for taking notes at meetings and I have yet to fully explore the sound recording features.....But I think as I work in a College as a Manager with lots of meetings to attend to, it could be quite a useful tool!!!
Cheers

  | Hello Will,
Thanks for the reply. I hope once you've had a chance to see it you'll be a fan.
If you've no experience of Early Doors, it's co-written by Craig Cash (formerly the partner - in both senses - of Caroline Aherne; they co-wrote and starred in The Royle Family) and his mate Phil Mealey. Both of them star in the series as regulars of The Grapes, a traditional backstreet Manchester boozer. Mealey had never written for television before Early Doors and he makes a great job of it.
More info is available at : http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/earlydoors/index.shtml
All the best.
