  | Apple ships QuickTime 7.2 Apple issues essential security patches, offers iPhone export to QuickTime users Jonny Evans
Apple has released QuickTime 7.2, introducing iPhone support and fixing security flaws. The update is available for both Mac (51.4MB) and Windows systems (19.3MB).
The release adds two new export features into the application: 'Export for iPhone' and 'Export for iPhone (Cellular)'. The former exports media in .m4v video format while the cellular option employs the smaller 3GP format. QuickTime 7.2 also introduces support for full screen viewing in QuickTime Player and updated the H.264 codec. Apple has also mended eight security vulnerabilities. Four of these flaws related to certain memory overflow bugs that could cause a crash when viewing malicious websites. Another three critical flaws relate to design issues in QuickTime for Java. Attackers could theoretically exploit these flaws by posting malicious Java applets on a website, where they could then compromise a victim's computer.

  | River Thames gets free WiFi River Thames to get a free WiFi network, two million go online Tom Jowitt, Techworld.com
The river Thames is to get a free WiFi network after two companies, namely free-hotspot.com and MeshHopper partnered up to launch what they claim is Europe's largest free metropolitian WiFi network. The 802.11g mesh network, offically known as "online-4-free.com", is situated along a 22 kilometre stretch of the Thames from Millbank to Greenwich, although this will be expanded to 36 kilometres in August.
The network is administed and run by MeshHopper, a UK company that provides WiFi technology and networks. MeshHopper partnered with free-hotspot.com, after the UK company experienced a dramatic decline in the number of users when it switched off the free element of its network. "MeshHopper realised they needed to offer a free component alongside their paid service," said Joe Brunoli, VP of HotSpot Market Development at free-hotspot.com, an Irish website that directs users to free WiFi hotspots around the world. The online-4-free.com network is free of charge to users, providing they sit through a 15- to 30-second advert in return for 15 minutes free wireless access. At the end of 15 minutes, the user may continue in free mode, in which case they must watch another advert, or they may opt to purchase a subscription for access without adverts. There is no time limit for the free access, Brunoli told Techworld, although they will just have to watch an advert every 15 minutes. There are estimated to be 250,000 residents and 21 million visitors to the MeshHoppper network area every year. In addition, approximately five million people travel on the Thames annually, and there are approximately two million workers along the river. The network will be available on the riverside, bridges and boats on the Thames

  | O2 'to get iPhone contract in UK'
Mobile phone operator O2 is reported to have won the sought-after deal to sell Apple's iPhone in the UK. Press reports said that O2 is set to sign an exclusive contract shortly and should have the new phones on sale in time for Christmas. However a spokesman for O2's owner, Spain's Telefonica, said that a deal had not been signed. More than 500,000 iPhones were sold in the first weekend in the US by AT&T, which has exclusive rights there. Vodafone, which had previously been tipped as the likely winner of the contract, saw its shares fall 2.4%. The agreement with O2 is reported to include Apple receiving a continuing share of the revenue generated for the network operator. The handsets are expected to be sold for about £300 and O2 will be hoping that the lure of the fashionable phone is enough to win customers from rival networks.

  | Huge iPhone sales, new products soon Analysts predict huge iPhone sales, new Macs, new iPods Jonny Evans
Huge iPhone sales and major product introductions appear in the frame as Apple enters the latter half of 2007, analysts claim. RBC Capital analysts now anticipate 13.5 million iPhone sales by the end of 2008, with Apple planning to produce 8 million of the devices by the end of 2007 - well ahead of Steve Jobs' target of ten million sales by the end of 2008.
According to financial website, Seeking Alpha, Apple's future iPhone product plans may include larger memory (16GB), lower prices and a 3G-capable handset by spring next year. RBC Capital also expects an updated iPod nano, a new iPod model and a new video iPod in the fourth quarter 2007, with some models potentially integrating features debuted on the iPhone. It's not all iPods and iPhones. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster is telling clients he is "80 per cent" certain Apple will launch a re-designed iMac this summer. The analyst predicts an ultra-portable MacBook Pro and also anticipates that iPods running Mac OS X are on their way, reports MacNN. And at Blackfriars Marketing, analyst Aric Winton speculates that the popularity of the iPhone may force Microsoft to abandon its dependence on proprietary systems. He argues that Microsoft's control of the desktop has given it a chance to keep mobile users locked into its technologies, such as Exchange or Windows Media. He notes the iPhone to be based on mainly open standards, and believes Microsoft will have to respond to Apple's threat. The analyst notes approximately four million mobile phones running Windows Mobile were shipped last year.

  | Yellow Submarine iPod rumour surfaces Special edition iPod may pack every Beatles recorded track made Jonny Evans
Though everyone isn't quite aboard - yet - rumours that The Beatles may soon show up on iTunes prevail, with the latest report claiming a special edition Yellow Submarine iPod is in the frame. Music industry analysts Music Ally believe that plans to bring music from the Fab Four are back on track, following the release of the iPhone.
They go further. While the analysts don't offer any clear time scale for the addition of the tracks to Apple's music service, they do expect a special edition iPod pre-loaded with every track ever produced by the band will debut as part of the new deal. A TechDigest report also claims music from The Beatles will be made available exclusively through iTunes for one month. The news follows earlier reports claiming music from the band would be made available in 2008.

  | In publishing and graphic design, lorem ipsum is standard placeholder text used to demonstrate the graphic elements of a document or visual presentation, such as font, typography, and layout. Lorem ipsum also serves as placeholder text in mock-ups of visual design projects before the actual words are inserted into the finished product. When used in this manner, it is often called greeking. Even though using "lorem ipsum" often arouses curiosity due to its resemblance to classical Latin, it is not intended to have meaning. Where text is visible in a document, people tend to focus on the textual content rather than upon overall presentation, so publishers use lorem ipsum when displaying a typeface or design in order to direct the focus to presentation. "Lorem ipsum" also approximates a typical distribution of letters in English, which helps to shift the focus to presentation.

  | Eject Key! Hey Will,
I've noticed that my macs Eject key is no longer as responsive as it once was. It used to be that you could press the key and instantly the CD tray would pop out. But now .. I have to hold the key down for a second or so. This happened after OS 10.4.9.
Normally you'd assume that the Eject key has simply been used too many times. OR !!!! Has it.
Cos A friend of mine also has this problem which he noticed after buying a new keyboard. Which funny enough he installed right after updating to 10.4.9
So .. is this a problem that everyone has. Has Apple changed something. Is this a "Feature", Per se. What is it?
Maybe other listeners have this problem to.

  | New iPhone web site Hi Will -
At our Glasgow Mac User Group (GlasMUG) meeting this evening, a new website was officially launched by some of the group and they are looking for ways to publicise it and to get people to join. Could you please mention the site - http://www.iphoneuklaunch.com/ - on the British Mac podcast? (and apologies in advance as I know you are iPhoned-out!)..
As a little thank-you in anticipation, I've done a good review of British Mac on my own website (address below).
Kind regards and love live British Mac!
