  | Apple iPhone rumours continue
Apple's iPhone rumour draws speculation across all quarters as chatter continues Macworld staff
The prospect of an Apple iPhone continues to set Wall Street tongues wagging. Following rumours that Apple has hired Foxconn to manufacture 12 million iPhones next year, Bear Stern's analysts, Andy Neff, Bill Hand and Ted Chung told clients the release of the much-mooted product could drop an extra $6 billion in revenue (22 per cent of earnings) into Apple's bank account next year.
To arrive at the figure, the analysts expect the device will cost in the region of $300 and a 15 per cent margin on the product. Apple also seems set for success with its existing iPod range this Christmas. Carl Howe of Blackfriars Communications expects that Apple's iPod range will be accessible to a wider market, following the introduction of the iPod shuffle. "Moving the price points down addresses a consumer segment who previously had considered iPods out of reach - and it boosts demand among the existing customer segments," he writes. DigiTimes chimes in with yet more information taken from its sources in the Far East. A report today explains that Taiwanese firms will benefit from the release of the iPhone, speculating that it will host a 2-megapixel camera. It speculates at other components of the product, claiming its keypad will come from Sunrex Technology, for example.

  | Mac Mail anti-spam tool ships Easy-to-use SidewinderX software will trace, track and report spam emails Jonny Evans
A new anti-spam tool, SidewinderX, has been released by Hendrickson Software Components. SidewinderX is an automated AppleScript-able spam tracing and reporting software tool for Apple Mail. The Universal Binary software works natively on both PowerPC and Intel-based Macs.
The software works with Mail to trace and report spam email, and "spamvertized" links embedded in emails. It allows users to categorise spam by content, send different abuse complaints, and use different CC lists for abuse complaints from each category. "SidewinderX is the ideal solution for spam-weary customers. Because it automatically traces the source of the spam and the embedded spamvertized and phishing links, and then reports the offenders to their ISPs. SidewinderX helps to eliminate the problem at the source," said Jeff Hendrickson, creator of the Sidewinder Rating Engine, and SidewinderX. "This first release is designed specifically for Mail and OS X, and versions will be available for other email clients and operating systems over the next few months." The software works by automatically tracing the source of spam and embedded links and reporting offenders to their respective Internet Service Providers. SidewinderX users typically see their spam levels drop dramatically within a few weeks. SidewinderX costs $19.95.

  | I’ve always liked the idea of being notified when I have new mail and while the Mail.app does play a little sound as default (and you can change this - this is covered in separate articles) and shows the number of unread messages in the Dock, there is an excellent piece of software called Growl that, when installed with a plug-in called GrowlMail, can give you a pop-up window showing you the subject of the message and the sender.
|
 |
 |
 |
 |
 |
  | However, it is not just Mail that Growl can be used with. You can find on their website the apps the developers are aware of that utilize Growl: http://growl.info/applications.php (they separate the apps by the type they are - e.g. Chat, Email, File Sharing, etc). Some of the applications that use the Growl notification system include:- Adium, Cyberduck, NewsFire, Quicksilver, Skype, Transmit and Vienna. You can also get plug-ins and scripts that cover the inbuilt applications on a Mac such as Safari and iTunes. The iTunes notifier, GrowlTunes will give you the track name, the length of the track, your rating, the artist and album name. See screenshot example on the next page.

  | Gavin Hall - smoking printer!
I have a Samsung ML1610 mono laser printer. Recently it has started making a strange burning smell, and a little puff of smoke comes out of it every time a page prints. It never used to do this, and I was wondering if you've come across anything like this?

  | Andy Rudkins new venture!
Will,
Hello mate, hope you are well?
Thought I would drop you a line to let you know of a new website that has been set up by a friend of a friend. It could quite simply be the best thing to ever happen to UK beer drinkers (of which I know you are one).
www.beerventures.co.uk
It's a really nice site which sells and delivers real beer to your home. The have a cracking range of products and are even putting together gift cases which may be ideal for Christmas? The only draw back is that you will have to get out of the chair to answer to door to the courier and occasionally go to the toilet, but I am sure that some clever scientists will be along soon with a solution to those issues.
Anyway, hope you like the site and although I did intend this as a personal email, I am sure my mate would appreciate a shameless plug.
Cheers,
Andy

  | I know this a bit of a cheek, but can you ask if there are any Mac Users that'd like to form a group in the North East (Sunderland, Newcastle, Durham etc.) I'll build and host the site, but need an outlet such as your show to see if there's potential interest out there. Thanks, Neil.
