Google goes mad!

Google gives Writely and Spreadsheets a common platform
By Juan Carlos Perez
Google has integrated its formerly separate spreadsheet and word processing applications, giving them a uniform user interface and a unified document repository.

By creating a common platform, Google hopes to make it easier for people to switch between Writely and Google Spreadsheets, Google officials said.

The combined product, called Google Docs & Spreadsheets is available for testing now, though Safari isn't a supported browser for the service.

Addressing this, Google states: "We have heard loud and clear that many of you really want Safari to work, and we have discussed the problem with the development teams."

Ye Old Mac & Mouse
I've just read some really sad news, Bill Douthett (a.k.a. Digital Bill from the Wizards of Technology) has passed away.

I used to love Bill's podcasts. Podcasting really is a medium where you, as a listener, feel like you have a personal one-to-one relationship with the podcaster. I feel so upset by this news and my wholehearted and deepest sympathy goes to Bill's family and friends.  §

British Mac review in iTunes
Phil Bridges and how to make a 3rd party web cam work with Macs
I bought a new Intel Mac mini recently and was surprised to see Logitech had not updated the driver for my Logitech QuickCam Pro 4000.   I did a quick 'Google' and found maccam http://webcam-osx.sourceforge.net/ - an open source web cam driver that offers Mac intel support for dozens of third party webcams ,,,,, yipee!

So now my Logitec cam worked fine with Skype and most other mac progs that needed a video source sucha s  Evocam etc.  It seems webCam manufacturers have not bothered to write dual binary drivers for OS X.. bunch of useless slackers eh!

BUT . my Logitech still wouldn’t work with iChat, and if fact it never worked with iChat when I had a G4.  I did some digging and it seems Apple are very picky about which webcams iChat uses .(crikey, anyone would think they made ahigh-end  webcam themselves eh!)

So, there’s a little utility called ichatusbcam http://www.ecamm.com/mac/ichatusbcam/  that lets iChat work with just about any Mac compatible camera, even a firewire DV cam.  At $15 (my PayPal account reads £8.50) so this is lot cheaper than buying an Apple isight camera.    There is a 7 day ‘try-before-you-buy’ facility so you can make sure this is for you.
Hope you can use this somewhere matey, must be a few folks out with intel macs scratching their heads...?
Ben needs help with Nano USB 1.0 problem

I've been trying to find out if the new nano is compatible with USB 1.0
On the blurb on various sites including Apple it just says USB 2.0, but doesn't say if it is backwards compatible (as many things are like flash memory sticks etc).

i realise it will be slow, but is it compatible?  I can cope with the £150 ish for a nano, but not enough for a new laptop!

thanks,

Ben

Dr. Who

Doctor Who first appeared on BBC television at 5:15 p.m. (GMT) on November 23, 1963.

    2.    Second Doctor, played by Patrick Troughton (1966–1969)
    3.    Third Doctor, played by Jon Pertwee (1970–1974)
    4.    Fourth Doctor, played by Tom Baker (1974–1981)
    5.    Fifth Doctor, played by Peter Davison (1981–1984)
    6.    Sixth Doctor, played by Colin Baker (1984–1986)
    7.    Seventh Doctor, played by Sylvester McCoy (1987–1989, 1996)
    8.    Eighth Doctor, played by Paul McGann (1996)
    9.    Ninth Doctor, played by Christopher Eccleston (2005)
    10.    Tenth Doctor, played by David Tennant (2005–present)

The programme was intended to be educational and for family viewing on the early Saturday evening schedule. Initially, it alternated stories set in the past, which would teach younger audience members about history, with stories set either in the future or in outer space to teach them about science. This was also reflected in the Doctor's original companions, one of whom was a science teacher and another a history teacher.

Dead Ringers, many thanks to Phil Bridges.
